Principal cellist of the Canadian Opera Company, Guillaume Artus comes to this winter residency, sponsored by the Drake Devonshire, with the desire to revive the Kodàly Sonata for Solo Cello in his repertoire. The composer himself predicted that no cellist “would be accepted who has not played it”. Indeed, this work is a staple in the cello repertoire and often a required piece at international competitions, known for its daunting virtuosity and dynamic expression. Flanking this work is Cassadó’s Suite, which draws elements from Spanish folk music, and the three movements are inspired by Castilla y La Mancha, Catalonia and Andalusia.
