With a blueprint that has become a Cheng² Duo signature, this program uncovers musical treasures that are often overshadowed yet sparkle with originality and depth, and juxtaposes them with well-known standards of the cello-piano repertoire.

The first half journeys to Paris, where all three composers met and drew inspiration from each other: Debussy’s beloved Cello Sonata, extremely concise while brimming with mystery and colour, sets the stage for Ravel’s early Sonate posthume, an unsung jewel in the violin realm and even more so in this version for cello. Falla’s Siete canciones populares españolas, originally for voice and piano, takes on new life in this evocative cello transcription, performed in its seldom-heard complete form and intended order. Tsintsadze’s Five Pieces on Folk Themes is a true hidden gem, transporting us to a Slavic sound world with the soulful energy of Georgian folk music, while Shostakovich’s Cello Sonata closes the program with its striking and uncharacteristic blend of romantic lyricism, acerbic wit, and stark defiance.
